‘Titane’ is about a serial killer that infiltrates a family in order to be cared for while she deals with an unexpected pregnancy. This is a surface level description of what we actually see in this film, and is an experience that can’t easily be explained. It’s either the must disturbing thing you’ll see all year, or the most heartfelt thing you’ll see. One thing for sure is you will be fully disturbed in this Sci-Fi Thriller that is the ‘Mandy’ of 2021.
The star of the show hands down is from the performances of Agathe Rousselle and Vincent Lindon, who’s characters are intertwined by happenstance, but finds meaning in ignorance as they both fall deeper into the lie perpetuated by both sides. I love the characters chemistry and dynamic as the film progresses, and it more than makes up for the more sinister and disturbing moments in the movie.
The film runs on surrealism in it’s story. It’s freaking batshit crazy at times yet easy to follow along. Neon has quickly become a company like A24, taking risks with their directors and what they put on the big screen and whatever you think at the end of ‘Titane’, you can’t say it wasn’t a unique and bold film.
All this being said, You need to comfortable with being uncomfortable to like this movie. Many times do I see audiences avoid films because it’s meant to leave you unsettled in places, and with the surrealism with ‘Titane’ that may be a dealbreaker. I strongly recommend this to people who have seen films like ‘Saw’, ‘Mandy’, or are interested in the story. Withold turning it off until the end, and I believe you will feel as I do, that this is the best horror film of 2021.
