Opinion: Why the all-women screening of Wonder-Woman shouldn’t matter!

wonder woman

We are living in a world that embraces outrage and encourages pettiness. It comes and goes in various forms, from frappe beverages to diverse castings in traditionally “white” roles (See Michael B. Jordan’s casting as “Fan4stic’s” Johnny Storm, and John Boyega’s casting as the first black stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Regardless of the final product of these films, there is no escape from the onslaught of hateful and idiotically bigoted comments that serve to try and justify archaic, backward thinking instead of celebrating this long awaited progressive time in the film industry.

Enter the new thing to be triggered about, Wonder Woman. Specifically the announcement from Alamo Drafthouse theaters that are showing a Women-only screening of the long awaited female-led superhero movie. The statement from Alamo say’s:

“The most iconic superheroine in comic book history finally has her own movie, and what better way to celebrate than with an all-female screening?

“Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say ‘People Who Identify As Women Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.

“So lasso your geeky girlfriends together and grab your tickets to this celebration of one of the most enduring and inspiring characters ever created.

This would seem like a fun chance to celebrate the momentous occasion, It’s innocent fun and CLEARLY not coming from a place of sexism or hate. That being said, my fellow Male counterparts that refuse to accept this announcement, in their pathetic overreaction, have caused controversy in something SO insignificant, that I needed to get my thoughts out about it. I’ve seen comments coming from the unevolved man-children demanding inclusion for the screening, suggesting that an all-female screening is sexist becauseexcluding men for ANY reason, including a screening of the film, is, in fact, sexism, suggesting an all-male screening of the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok happen to balance the imaginary scale they invented and some people altogether BOYCOTTING the Alamo for grounds of sexism.

Not only does this argument have no validity, but It is an incredibly stupid argument to be having IN THE FIRST PLACE! With everything going on in the world today, why stand your ground on THIS? Can we not celebrate the fact that not only is an insanely large portion of the Superhero fan community finally being represented for the first time in decades but that this is the first time in the 75+ years of Wonder-Woman being around, that we finally are able to see her realized on the big screen! The people arguing against this screening do not have the ability to look beyond their gender stereotypes, dumbfounded by the idea of female empowerment that will inspire millions of little girls around the world, but they lack the empathy to realize how important an all-women screening is for this time we are all living in.

To conclude this rant, let me address the men (and possibly even some women) who feel “Attacked” by this article. Grow the hell up, stop getting upset about things that don’t matter, and most importantly evolve, because this new world has no place for your fragile egos.
